Wormhole

Nicholas Lees has combined his artistic practice wth a career in Higher Education, as a Senior Lecturer. He is currently completing a research degree at the RCA, London, which will culminate in a new body of work to be shown at the RCA in the summer of 2012.

His current work is an expression of tension and resolution between polarities; particularly focussed on the relationship between 'artificial' and 'natural' aesthetics. He is inspired by instances of the collision of formal qualities and meetings of the natural and made world, such as a tree growing round a metal railing.

He is particularly interested in the relationship between process of fabrication and the aesthetic of the result. Is carving reductive and 'mechanical' or handbuilding additive and 'organic'? His use of processes seeks to challenge and subvert any such notions.
