Saucer of milk

Elena Duff was born in London, then lived in Ireland until moving to Berlin, Germany in 2007. She studied a joint degree in Fine Art Painting and Art History at the National College of Art and Design in Thomas Street, Dublin and graduated with honours in 1995. Her small sculpted figures border between lifelike and doll-like, and are subjects for her art. These inanimate models pose within different scenes and allow her to create an alternative world, similar to ours, childlike, but yet grown up. Fairytales for adults. The figures are created not only as subject matter for photographs and paintings, but outside of this function they become small sculptures which serve as finished pieces in their own right. This current work is the result of her art practice slowly evolving over the years; experiments with different styles and techniques eventually led to the creation of a series of works in 2009 under the theme ‘My Fairytale Life’. These are small, intimate pieces, constructed from pen and ink drawings which are cut out and assembled to create three dimensional pieces. Her aim is to capture the fleeting: thoughts, dreams, hopes and emotions; and as such these works are both personal and universal.
