Kate Theodore is drawn to and responds to the multiplicity of repetitive forms and forces which occur on different scales in nature. These forms recombine and resurface throughout her paintings. She works outside, on roof tops preferably, and is excited by the physicality and tactile properties of mixed media.
The core of her work is abstract and experimental. For Theodore it is a place to open possibilities, to reunite qualities that have been culturally polarised - chaos and order, creation and destruction, rest and transition, reason and chance, emotion and observation - into a state of playful balance.
In this new series, spaces are interrupted by competing influences - spontaneously applied paint, charcoal and oil bar that are scraped, gouged, dripped and rubbed on the surface. In contrast, there are anonymous zones, contemplative, quiet places where the paintings are allowed to breathe.
"Euphony and Cacophony" is an attempt to go beyond surface, form and colour into a dimension of rhythmic space where the lyrical and the discordant co-exist as one and the same thing.
